You assume 100% responsibility for any and all damages incurred to the car during the rental. You will first have to pay for the repairs and related fees while in Costa Rica. Only then can you file a claim to be reimbursed by your card carrier. Even though your credit card may cover damages to your car in Costa Rica.
All agencies require Costa Rica MANDATORY liability insurance to cover possible damage, NOT to the rental car, but to other people, cars, property etc. Figure on spending 55 to 65 dollars a day depending on car type.
1. Re: Car rental insurance. Third party liability insurance is madatory in Costa Rica, and it usually is not part of the daily rental rate. For sure, all on-line companies like Expedia do not include this cost into their quotation. Thus expect to pay extra 10-15 USD per day on top of your Expedia quote.
The most reputable and most recommended agencies in Costa Rica all include insurance in their quotes. Basically, you can use your credit card for CDW but you must pay for liability insurance -SLI- and that can run $10-$20 a day, depending.
