I also flew in and out last month and literally had to fill out the online application at the check-in counter because I forgot to do it before hand (it took a few minutes and I received the QR code immediately).

It is the square mosaic of black squares and it carries maybe as much as 1,000 times more information than an old bar code. I now see that the QR code on the Trenord paper or .pdf ticket has the "PNR number" above it.
