I plan to spend 4 days in Lisbon without a car, and then rent a car for 2 days of driving around central Portugal to see places like Obidos, Nazare, Tomar, etc. Looking at my options at Lisbon airport, everyone gets terrible reviews. According to the reviews, if I rent from Avis or Budget, I will wait 2-3 hours in line to get my car.

Having rented cars for years in the Algarve with zero issues I was surprised to see so many negative reviews about experiences at Lisbon airport. Travelling with two young children, we are keen to avoid too many problems.
2 years ago. I found a great prepaid rate from Thrifty at Lisbon Airport for August. I've also found some reviews saying that the Hertz brands (Thrifty and Dollar) find ways to fraudulently overcharge customers. Since the reviews are not very recent, I thought the good people on Tripadvisor might have some up to date experiences to share.
