1. Re: free transfer from subway to bus. Yes, the free transfer is within 2 hours, the card "remembers" it. On a regular bus you put the card in the fare reader and it will say "transfer" on the LED. On an SBS bus (like the 34th street bus) you put you card in the machine at the curb at the bus stop and get a paper ticket.
You could also take the free Massport shuttle to the Airport Station, take the Blue Line three stops to State St station, transfer to the Orange line, go three stops to the Back Bay Station, then walk south on Dartmouth as above. Massport shuttles are free, but it will cost you $2.65 to ride the subway. This will also take about an hour.
