If you are going to use the subway or the buses more than twice a day, buy an unlimited metrocard. I love the unlimited one, because if you start out tramping along with vigour, and then find your back aches and your shoes hurt, you can just jump onto a subway train or a bus for free. They cost $30 for a week plus $1 for the original card.
The 7 day unlimited Metrocard is $33 per person. When we are leaving town and have days left, we give it to a local medical clinic, to someone working at the airport ( and have received a surprising amount of gratitude for this) or hand it to someone when we get off the AirTrain.

When you walk out to the bus stop, you need to buy a bus ticket from a machine at the stop with your Metrocard and hold on to it. When you arrive at the subway stop, use the NetrocCard. 2.
