We typically jog over to US 56 at Plains (to Hugoton) and continue through Clayton, NM to our Santa Fe destination. Decent road. We've traveled this route 10 or more times.

I-80 saves us 1-1/2 hours driving time, simply because I-70 bows so far south in KS. We travel I-80 to I-76 to US 34, which takes you straight into Estes Park. If you like seeing the countryside you can take 36 Hwy all the way across KS to Estes Park. It is a little longer due to the speed limit being 60-65 mph.
