17 helpful votes. Kansas City to Branson drive. 17 years ago. We will be staying with friends in Kansas City for a few days before driving on down to Branson. I've seen that people on this forum have said it's about a 3-3.5 hour drive. Mapquest is about the same. However, friends in KC claim that it's more like 5-6 hours, especially on weekends.

Salina has many more options for food and lodging. Both cities have a lot to do, though Old Abilene town is far down my picks.
Ellsworth, Kansas, an old cowtown is only about seven miles south of I-70 and has lots of Old West history. A fun stop is Drovers Mercantile in Ellsworth. Talk with Cowboy, Jim Gray or his sidekick Kassie, about the frontier history of the area and the historic cattle drives. The store has lots of real cowboy stuff.

Re: Hwy 36. 18 years ago. US 36 is a very good road through Missouri (lots of 4 lane stretches) and most of Kansas. In Western Kansas, the route becomes less heavily traveled. Around the Norton area, there is a route which cuts South to I-70. I would recommend making the cut. fyi- I-70 through Missouri is a real pain.
Advice/suggestions welcome! 1. Re: California to Kansas. A lot of it parallels some of I 40 in AZ, NM and TX. Very scenic in those areas. 2. Re: California to Kansas. Route 66 is a good road to drive. The issues you may encounter are road construction delays, etc.
