   There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.

There's now way to get there without going through the mountains. However, the further you go on I-70 before turning south, the less of those roads you'll have.
