Listerine is a brand of antiseptic mouthwash that is promoted with the slogan "Kills germs that cause bad breath". Named after Joseph Lister, who pioneered antiseptic surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland, Listerine was developed in 1879 by Joseph Lawrence, a chemist in St. Louis, Missouri. [1] [2]

The article claims the "original gold Listerine" contained as much as 26.9% alcohol, but this claim is followed by "citation needed." The 26.9% figure is cited often online, but I can't find anything to back it up. There is a 1952 Listerine commercial on YouTube that shows a close-up of the "original" bottle, which lists alcohol as 25%.
