I know that 011 is the U.S. exit code and 49 is the country code for Germany, but I haven't been able to figure out the rest should be 011 + 49 + my U.S. area code and number, or 011 + 49 + 1 + my U.S. area code and number. (In my state you have to dial 1 + area code even when calling in your own town.) Thanks for any definite information!!

So if you use your US sim card you will always have to dial +49 to call a German number. +49 replaces the "0" that you would dial when calling a German number from a German phone. You do not have to dial the area code when calling a land-line number from a land-line which has the same area code.
