1 year ago. If you have an Icelandic SIM, then to call Icelandic numbers it's just the number (like 551 12345), although dialing the country code as well would work fine too (like +354 551 12345). To call a US number with an Icelandic SIM, it's as Jens says (for example, +1 789 123 4560).

They are relatively inexpensive and easy to top up from the phone once you are setup. As long as your phone is unlocked, you just pop in the sim and you will be connected.
If you have an iPhone XS or above you can set it up with an eSIM which is embedded in the phone. It means you don't need a physical SIM card (you can take it out and use your phone as normal) so when you go abroad you have an empty SIM slot. You can switch quite easily between the eSIM and the physical SIM.
The problem I am finding is these purchases require “verification by Visa” (or MasterCard), where you are sent a 4 digit code by SMS to enter, before the transaction can proceed. When at home in Australia this is simple, but overseas it is IMPOSSIBLE, because most Australians use a LOCAL SIM card in their phone, due to the price.
