At the risk of my father cringing in his grave because he was instrumental in the design and construction of the interstate highway system back in the day, stick to the boring, designed for safety, interstate highway system. That route would be I 25 south to I 40 west.

Greetings Barbara, The section of Route 29, Greensboro, N.C. up to Charlottesville, VA, I-64 West, has a number of small cities & towns, with traffic signals, varying speed limits, and local traffic. I prefer I-81.

What I'm trying to avoid is (nighttime) driving, planing to leave at 5 am from VA, then arrive evening KC, then first thing 5-6 am start on the way to Denver. Drive up to mt Rushmore adds another day driving. In Denver you woukd fo there, boulder, ricky Mountain np, ski tiwns, Colorado Springs.
