More and more tours, when overseas, can ONLY be done online: Admission tickets to museums, theatres etc., train reservations, and 2-3 hour tours with small operators. The problem I am finding is these purchases require “verification by Visa” (or MasterCard), where you are sent a 4 digit code by SMS to enter, before the transaction can proceed.
Yes, this is a problem. We were in Portugal for a few weeks and had to get texts for 2FA; one bank would not allow e-mail authentication. I get it; text authentication is more secure and e-mail can be hacked, but in a global workspace it does not make sense that we will always have that phone and number with us.

1. My BMO Mastercard allows email as a 2FA verification option. 2. My Tangerine Mastercard allows the 2FA verification to be disabled. Just have to phone customer service before leaving on trip. 3. I have not tried this yet but it may be possible to add a foreign telephone number from an eSim as a 2FA option.
