If you do ByPass the Counter (after check-in)- you enter a credit card. Alamo authorizes $1.00 immediately to that card. I do not know the cancel policy after this stage.
The initial rental car location ends up with a car that now can't be rented in it's local area, so it ends up being down a car. Without seeing the T&C's, we have no idea whether the $750, which does sound very high, was based on the location/distance you were driving the car to or was a flat fee that Alamo has in it's contract with Allegiant.

Alamo tends to offer a low budget price to attract people, particularly foreign visitors, and them give them the hard sell on additional insurance (which they may or may not need) at the counter. I have been in line behind such visitors and they were basically frightened into buying the extra insurance at considerable additional cost.
You have even less protection in that scenario. Even if they take your money in advance, they can give it back if they don't have a car. It is different than a hotel which when you pay, they guarantee they have a room. 83. Re: BEWARE - Do NOT book a car rental through Priceline.com. I reserved and prepaid for a Dollar car rental through Priceline in early Sep. 2021, for pick-up a couple of days later at EWR. When I got to the rental counter after an hour standing in line, the agent could not find any reservation for me.
The way I have done it:: Alamo has "Skip the counter option". Become a loyalty member with Alamo. Rent through Costco. Take the Costco/Alamo confirmation #, go to the Alamo site using your loyalty number. Look up your reservation with the # . When you checkin 48 hour or more hours before pickup you can chose the Skip.
Re: Budget vs Alamo car rental. 6 years ago. yes Alamo way preferable with online check in and skip the counter. Budget does not let you "skip the line" they apparantly have a seperate fast break line. The last time I was with Budget there was a line out the building and they let people in a few at a time. Wait times were about 90 min.
