We will be visiting Texas in March 2020. We propose to hire a car for four weeks. Has anyone got any suggestions on how we go about paying cashless tolls other than signing up for the extortionate daily fees run by rental car companies -most days we will be well away from the big cities and not driving on toll roads.

For rental cars, they work off license plates. In Texas, Hertz registers their cars with PlatePass, their third party partner for tolls. When the car is so registered, PlatePass gets the bill and processes it for Hertz, charging your card a fee for each day you use a toll road, plus the usual pay-by-mail toll.
