   New York State has the highest tax on rental cars. Almost 19%. New Jersey is closer to 7% plus $5.00 / day. Connecticut is the most friendly. Airports charge obscene facilities surcharges so local locations are often more economical even if the base rate is slightly higher.

   Now looking at renting a car from New York City for one day (it will be Sunday 24th April, also Easter Sunday) Were staying in hotel W 55th St, so trying to pick up a car from around that area. We will also aim to drop it back that night and dont have to worry about parking. Ive found a depot for Avis and Hertz which are only a block or so away.

   Stamford CT and New Haven CT have car rentals at the train station too. You can rent a car in downtown Boston, save the Boston Airport surcharge, return it in NYC and it works out very economically (sometimes). The trick is simply to avoid picking the car up in New York City. Now don't go telling everybody or they'll start plugging these loopholes.
