As a standard protocol whenever renting a vehicle and using toll roads, make sure the windshield mounted transponder is closed. If it is open and you go through a toll booth to pay with cash, you will trigger a toll back to the rental car and the subsequent fees. Always make sure the transponder is closed so that it doesn't trigger a toll.
