Yes, the added taxes and fees for the Express Deal makes the "deal" less impressive, but the Express Deal still works out to be cheaper (at least when I searched). And on top of that, Priceline routinely sends out coupon codes for use on Express Deals only (right now I have a coupon code I could use) which would make the Express Deal even cheaper.
I would consider Priceline for a big discount, but not just to save a few bucks. I ended up booking direct with Alamo car rental . I like Alamo because as a member of their free Insiders club I got a small discount (maybe 5%) off the price, but more importantly I can check in online and avoid the airport check in desk by simply going to the lot ...

Two days ago I was trying to book a hotel in the Bay Area. I was trying to use a coupon on their Priceline app which was the only way they said I could get the discount. Tried several times using different credit cards, devices and even wifi but always had purchase cancelled during processing.

However time pressures sometimes means it’s easier to see the sort of prices on offer on an aggregator site rather than traveling through each supplier individually. I’ve learned a lesson though.
