The trip now has to be shortened to 6 days and I'll need to return the car early. If I rebook that trip, I'll end up paying $1020 now for the 6 days.
Alamo is on Level 4. You need to drive your rental car up the ramps to Level 4 inside the garage to return it. After returning your car, follow the signs to "SFO Terminals" or "AirTrains". They should all around inside the garage directing customers. If you don't want to take elevators, there are always stairs.

If you were to take the car back early, you might be charged for 6 days, instead of the cheaper weekly rate. Report inappropriate content.
When will you be dropping off your car at the Rental Car Center?. Because I think that during the times when the AirTrain schedule is not as frequent (e.g. way early in the morning or late at night), from the Long-Term Parking to the Rental Car Center (and then to other SFO terminals), the cars switch tracks to the other side when approaching the Rental Car Center.

We were due to drop it off at 5pm but we were 2 hours early. We checked the car back in with no dramas. 2 days after arriving home we were slapped with a $402 charge on the credit card.

Car rental facilities are located on the ground floor of the short-term parking garage directly across from the terminal buildings. Here is Alamo's local number (801) 575-2211. Usually you just return the car where you picked it up.

All the airport rental locations are open basically 24 hours and lots of people have early morning flights so they completely accommodate that. All the car rental locations are slightly removed from the airport but there will be a shuttle from the rental car lot to the terminals.
