i use google maps all the time, they are especially good for avoiding traffic delays e.g. taking the back roads around christchurch at peak time. I find them really helpful for directions. The timings can be a bit low, but they are a great place to start, and just add on a bit extra time for each drive,

If you are thinking of using a smart phone for navigation, you need to find a map app that downloads the map information to your phone and then does not need a data connection.
I’ve found Google Maps to be very reliable in France. The “offline” feature works really well if you don’t have data coverage. I don’t drive in France myself but I spend a lot of time in the passenger seat beside a professional who does, and his go-to app is Google plus a paper Michelin atlas.
