Airport shops selling simcard in Vietnam are never official branch shops and many people were sold unregistered cards which stopped working after a couple of days. That's why I always recommend to buy from the official shops downtown. In Hanoi for example: Viettel Store. +84 24 6651 3656.
Everyone raves about Viettel. I'm sure they are fine. I got a Vinaphone, mainly because that was the guy in the shop offered and the price was right. I paid 160,000 for 30 days. 1gb per day and calls to mobiles in Vn, including other providers. My 30 days is nearly up and I got text asking me to recharge.
Probably because the vast majority of tourists stay in / near the Old Quarter. Having said that, I went to a Viettel store last year, a fairly significant distance from the tourist area of HCMC, and had no problem getting a sim that lasted the required 30 days. Very little English spoken, but there are ways. :-)
Viettel store in District 1. For anyone else looking for the official Viettel store it is approx 10 to 15 shop houses from the main entrance to the 5 star Pullman Hotel on Tran Hung Dao Street. More people know where the hotel is than they know where the Viettel store is including taxi drivers.

I visited the Viettel store at 53 P. Lương Văn Can, on the northwest side of the lake. They have an electronic kiosk where you can purchase SIM cards and data packages by yourself, in English. The SIM card itself costs 50,000 VND.
