If you do want to take your flat iron with you (I always do), you can get a voltage converter at Radio Shack for US $7.99. (The prongs also fit UK outlets, just in case you wondered.) That's the price in Boston, not sure about Michigan prices. Best investment ever, as I have never ever had a problem in the last 18 or so trips.
Everything I am bringing other than my curling iron doesn't need one, but I'm afraid the curling iron will burn out over there and it's one I really like so I don't want to risk it. I know you can buy a cheap curling iron here for between 15 and 20 USD and I figure I can just buy a cheap one when I get there and leave it when I go back home.

If it does not already have the right plug, you will need an adapter which will cost less than £2. You can probably order one on-line at home so you have it when you travel.
Answer 1 of 6: I saw a 10 year old post on this. Would like to update. I was in Italy and had a disaster with my curling iron used with an adaptor--burt my hair bad. Next trip I will go to a drugstore there and buy something they use...direct plug in...
