What worked out best for us last year was to keep our original reservation and then a couple of days after we picked up the car, we called Avis and asked how much it would be to extend another day. I think there was a $12 charge for making a change, and a $45 charge for the extra day.

You can use Expedia or other third party sites to compare rates, but then go directly to the rental car company's website to reserve. It's better not to get a third party involved, especially if there are any issues.

Ok, so we booked a rental car through Expedia (no pre-payment, it was cheaper than DHRC and Costco) and are trying to call Avis to make sure the Avis preferred number is added to the reservation. But the Avis agent (calling Avis directly, not Avis OGG) says he can't do it, and that Expedia has to call them to solve that.

There will be no additional charges unless. 1) You ask for additional services when picking up the car, such as changing insurance, asking for Serius Radio, upgrading to a different car type. 2) You may get billed if you use their fast pass on the car to use toll roads.
