What worked out best for us last year was to keep our original reservation and then a couple of days after we picked up the car, we called Avis and asked how much it would be to extend another day. I think there was a $12 charge for making a change, and a $45 charge for the extra day.

Ok, so we booked a rental car through Expedia (no pre-payment, it was cheaper than DHRC and Costco) and are trying to call Avis to make sure the Avis preferred number is added to the reservation. But the Avis agent (calling Avis directly, not Avis OGG) says he can't do it, and that Expedia has to call them to solve that.
1. Re: Expedia.com Car Rental Question. I suggest you reserve the rental directly from the rental car company rather than Expedia. You can use Expedia or other third party sites to compare rates, but then go directly to the rental car company's website to reserve. It's better not to get a third party involved, especially if there are any issues.

1. Re: Rental cars late return fee. Yes, it is normal. Normally the car-rental -periods are 24 hours, Some car-rental-companies have a grace period of 1 hour, but not more. So you'd had to pay 16 days anyway. Normally, before Covid, you only had to phone the rental company that you'll arrive late and it was ok.

Most of the time with Avis Preferred there will be a board with names on it, if your name is there with a stall numbers, you just go to the stall, check out your car for damage, get in, go to the exit and give them your license and paperwork and you are on your way.
