In the United Kingdom, telephone numbers are administered by the Office of Communications ( Ofcom ). For this purpose, Ofcom established a telephone numbering plan, known as the National Telephone Numbering Plan, which is the system for assigning telephone numbers to subscriber stations. Telephone numbers are of variable length.

From 1 June 1999, the new 020 code for London was introduced to replace the 0171 and 0181 codes, re-unifying the London telephone area under one code as it had been under the 01 area code. The leading 0 of a UK telephone number is never optional. If you are dialling from another UK telephone, you must incluide it. If you are dialling from an overseas telephone, you must not use it.
