After a few decompression days in Auckland, I will be renting a car for the driving portion of the trip. Is google maps a reliable source for roads or is there something better. I have a National Geographic road map but it is a year or two old and being a solo driver, I can't look at it while driving. Major routes would be: Auckland to Paihai
Google Map France can also be downloaded for offline use. You just won't get live traffic. Map use doesn't consume a ton of data anyway. I have an old but still kicking Garmin as well. I still use it when I drive in foreign countries. I then use Google Map as a back-up, primarily for searches.

If you are thinking of using a smart phone for navigation, you need to find a map app that downloads the map information to your phone and then does not need a data connection.
Bing Maps – covers the whole country. Google Maps - covers the whole country. Libre Map Project. MapQuest - covers the whole country. The National Map by the United States Geological Survey. Roadtrippers - covers the whole country. TerraServer-USA - covers the whole country.
Even where the roads are tar google just do a simple sum Distance/Speed limit which is obviously crazily optimistic. Scientific fact. Nobody can drive at an average speed anywhere near the speed limit.
Re: Using I-Phone Maps or google maps for driving directions? 2 years ago. We used to use maps.me but tried the google maps on our last 2 trips and prefer that. We were able to find our friend Janet's house in San Nic without having to stop and ask strangers, which we have never been able to do in 20 years ;)
