It is indeed required before flying, but, since you cannot check in online for international departures, you will do it at the check in counter.

Once you enter your PNR (record locator) and name and your itinerary is located, you can pull up the seat map (as indicated above) by selecting Change Seats.

Even if you have already bought your seat selection they might have cancellations or changes and you might get side by side seats.
