For security you just scan yours and hand over your ID, then say "and this one is for [my son, my husband, my daughter, etc.], and scan that one while they (or you) hand over their ID. Same thing at the boarding gate, just without the ID part.

We both have new passports and our old ones, expiring 02/2018 and 06/2018, are on record at AA. I checked in online with the old numbers and got the first leg boarding passes printed off.
