The issue with cars in the US rental market is that they all have automatic transmissions which is not a good idea for a small cars.

    However, in general economy will be the smallest car and economy will be the next size. If you go to any company's website they will give examples of cars in each category. Personally for driving on American highways I would not rent smaller than a mid size or intermediate, which are the common terms for the next size up.
