Re: Long term car rental (four weeks) First of all, most definitely rent Off the Airport due to being required to pay an airprot service fee that can be a significant added charge for a monthly rental! I'd suggest you wait until the next morning (Feb 8) to get your car and return it the day before (Mar. 6).

San Tan Valley is about 45 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, and, because there is no public transit I know of, you would have to take a cab. The cab fare would probably be quite a bit more than the charges at the airport.

   Likely you are reading some reviews of the "off-brand" rental companies. Stick with the majors, such as Hertz, Avis, National, Thrifty, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, and you're less likely to have problems. It also helps to join a "frequent renter" club with a car rental company: Hertz - #1 Club; National - Emerald Club; Avis - My Avis; etc.

My wife and I recently moved to Phoenix from Minnesota and I found that transporting our car would cost around $1000 also. Any reputable and safe transportation company will charge you near that price.
