I agree that you don't have to pay airport fees when you rent off-terminal, but when you get to the car rental counter, the customer service rep will still try to sell you the theft and collision damage waiver insurance. I'm going down for a week at the end of this month, and I want to get a cheap rental car. I usually use Hertz, but for some reason, their prices are inflated to over $500 for the week! Hotwire has some cheap options, but I don't know which rental car company it will be, and it is non-refundable, so I'm kind of nervous.
DO NOT use Hotwire. I reserved a car thru them and the pickup for the car was 5 miles from the airport SFO. Payless car was the worst rental experience ever. The Hotwire Rate I booked the res. showed a VW Jetta at 27.49 per day.
