This approach almost always works to get a much less expensive car. For example, on our most recent trip, the airport rental for a week with a full sized car was over $600. The location less than 2 miles away was $380 on the website. Calling directly to the location (not the 800 number) got it down to $290.
Before you go with the cheapest keep this in mind. Have you ever been bumped from a flight? Car rentals work just like that where as when things get "tight", and by that I mean they start running out of cars, Priceline, Hotwire, Expedia, Carrentals.com, any third party that is not Costco, is the first to go.
Be careful with Hotwire on rental cars...the car types they show on the website are not what the agency offers locally. We rented a Cadillac ATS or similar for San Jose de Cabo in Mexico on 7/23/15 and the similar was a Nissan Maxima...which I would have been ok with but you can rent a Nissan Maxima or similar at the same location for 1/2 the cost.
From Hotwire, they have given me rates for cars that are in Hartford, CT which is a 1/2 hour away and in Windsor which is 10 minutes away and there is no rental car shuttle to that location, so you would have to get a taxi. I think Hotwire is disreputable to treat potential customers this way.
I'm going down for a week at the end of this month, and I want to get a cheap rental car. I usually use Hertz, but for some reason, their prices are inflated to over $500 for the week! Hotwire has some cheap options, but I don't know which rental car company it will be, and it is non-refundable, so I'm kind of nervous.
