   For background, I have rented NUMEROUS vehicles..especially from Hertz (actually was a PC member for a long time). I received an email this morning from Hertz, which I have never seen before: "A selection of our best ever Premium Upgrades can be yours for $35* more per day… $25* more per day for Platinum and President’s Circle members".

   I am a Gold member as well, and Hertz always sends me a text message (called a "Carfirmation") upon arrival at the airport, with the type and location of my car. Sometimes they will offer me an upgrade on the spot, which I can confirm from my phone as I am leaving the airport. This still allows me to bypass the counter.

   Last year I rented a standard SUV from Hertz i Los Angeles. I paid (in advance) around 600$ for 15 days. Now....when I arrived at Hertz they did not have a standard SUV with XM radio as we had ordered. I explained that the XM radio was not that important. They offered me an upgrade to a Infiniti FX35 for 180$. I was also offered an Audi Q7 for 260$

   No. The cars are assigned at the counter. So book the class you want. No free upgrades. I've been offered free upgrades at the counter in JAC but at smaller airports, there are usually keys attached to the contracts (pre-assigned) so book the type of car you want.
