In the redwoods there are many campgrounds and RV parks which stay open all year. Privately owned RV parks and campgrounds do not book up months ahead like the state parks do. Privately owned ones also have hookups, usually full hookups, whereas in California most state parks do not have any hookups and are still fairly high priced.

This road leaves out of Ferndale, or out of Humboldt Redwoods State Park (101). We left out of Ferndale, and drove the entire length of it back to HRSP. It took about 4 hours. This beach is 5 miles west of Ferndale on a narrow country road past old farms & ranches. The views have been preserved by the dictates of the California Coastal Commission and are spectacular. After walking on the beach, drive up the little hill to the south to the old Centerville Naval facility area where a day use park is being created.
It isn't in the woods, but it's on the beach. Prairie Creek Redwoods has a nice campground in a redwood grove along a creek. It's a mix of tents and RVs, but when we've camped tgere, we didn't notice generators. I guess it's the luck of the draw, but we've spent a total of 8 or 9 nights there. Reply.
The scenic drive is 80 miles long and takes 3 hours to complete due to the road conditions. The total 80 miles is a patchwork of pot holes, patched holes, gravel roads, newly paved roads, etc. We certainly would expect a road touted as a scenic drive would have decent roads so you could enjoy the views.
