Google maps is great for comparing transit (subway/bus) times to walking times to driving (taxi) times. That's all I use. Citymapper reportedly is better for just the subway, as it tells you which exit to use. I guess for me, I'd rather risk the wrong exit than learn a new app, but other people swear by Citymapper.

Re: What is best app for route planning for NYC? 6 years ago. Google Maps has a great function called Directions. Plug in your location and your destination and the results for route and the time it'll take are provided for (1) vehicle (2) public transport - ie train or bus (3) walking.

However, I like to use Google Maps for planning. I use the walking mode, enter the first location, then ask for directions to the second location.
