Ithaca High School has won five New York State Class A boys’ ice hockey championships (1984, 1987, 1994, 2000, 2007), as well as four Upstate New York Girls' Hockey League championships (2001, 2002, 2003, 2011). The Ithaca women's varsity swim team has had more than two decades of consecutive Section IV titles and several unofficial state titles.

NYSAHA recognized high school hockey in 1982 but league championship were being held as early as 1972 in Buffalo. NYSAHA divided into two divisions in 2002 as prior to that year, only one championship was awarded. In 2008-09, there was no club state championship. For the 2009-10 season, WNYHSCHL will join AAU.
After the first two tournaments were held in Syracuse and Rochester in 1979 and 1980, the competition moved to Glens Falls through 2010 and then to Albany. In 2015, because the Times Union Center was used for the NCAA Women's Basketball Albany Regional, the Federation tournament was held at SEFCU Arena, the home court of the University at Albany, SUNY basketball teams.
The team has won 15 New York State championships, including four consecutive between 2002 and 2005, and 34 Section III championships. As of 2011, the program has produced 52 high school All-Americans since 1971. John Desko, the former head coach of Syracuse University's men's lacrosse team is a former player and alumnus of the school.

Bethlehem Central School District believes that sports foster education, and supports more than 20 sports across three seasons. The district belongs to the New York State Athletic Association and competes as a Class AA school in Section II. BC's league affiliation is with the Suburban Scholastic Council, in which it competes in the gold division.
