The history of Nauvoo, Illinois, starts with the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes who frequented the area, on a bend of the Mississippi River in Hancock County, some 53 miles (85 km) north of today's Quincy. They called the area " Quashquema ", in honor of the Native American chief who headed a Sauk and Fox settlement numbering nearly 500 lodges.
The temple was an invitation for God to reside among them and, therefore, required considerable effort, care, and sacrifice. After the untimely deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith (their religious leaders), many church members left Nauvoo and migrated to the Utah Territory, and the temple fell into disuse; a tornado destroyed the building in 1850.
