Nashville is not in the mountains. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are but you must consider SO many visitors and traffic. Very crowded. You could combine with Chattanooga that is surrounded by mountains and beautiful scenery along the Tennessee Riverfront. The area is known for outdoor activities that include tubing.
When I stayed overnight in Nashville, I always stay on the east side not too far from the airport in MT. Juliet TN. Nice area with a good Hampton Inn and restaurants in the area. I have been stuck too many times in Nashville traffic that I try to avoid downtown . Nashville. It takes about 3.5 hours from Nashville to Gatlinburg.
Re: Best route from Nashville to Gatlinburg. Take I-40 E and take the Lenoir City exit. If you want to avoid a section of Lenoir City, take I-40 E to I-75 S and take the Lenoir City exit off of I-75. Follow hwy 321 toward Maryville.

54 reviews. 39 helpful votes. 1. Re: Road Trip Advice - Gatlinburg to Nashville. 6 years ago. I can't speak for the tea or quirky diners, but I wholeheartedly recommend taking Little River Road through the park from Gatlinburg to Townsend, then take 321 through Townsend, Maryville and Lenoir City.
A right turn inside the park takes you there. A left turn inside the park will head you toward Gatlinburg. Cades Cove is 8 miles away. Gatlinburg is a 45 minute drive along Little River Road with beautiful river views. Little River Road intersects hwy 441/Newfound Gap Road by the Sugarland Visitor Center. A left turn heads you into Gatlinburg.
2. Re: Driving from Nashville. I think you will enjoy taking the roundabout way. Get off at the Watertown exit in Lebanon. Although most of the small towns you go through are slightly off the main highway, you will still see beautiful country side. You go through Watertown, Alexandria, Liberty, Dowelltown, Smithville, Sparta, Crossville, Rockwood.
Take I-40 from Nashville, at the junction with I-75 turn south for about 10 miles. Get off at U.S. 321 at the Lenior City exit. Follow 321 through Maryville and Townsend. You will come to a stoplight where TN 73 continues into the Park and 321 takes a left into Pigeon Forge.
