That's one of the busiest times around July 4th. We went 3-4yrs ago and it was crazy busy. They didn't shut down the Parkway untill about 20-30 minutes before midnight. My advice is eat supper a little earlier and get a snack later on. Get an early start if you head into the national park. Use the Gatlinburg bypass to avoid the downtown traffic.
Gatlinburg has a parade at midnight on the 3rd going into the 4th and on July 4th the city will have fireworks. The best spot to watch them would be around Parkway and East Parkway(traffic light #3). During the day they have activities as well in the park. Parking is congested. You can go to Gatlinburg for fireworks at night on the 4th. On midnight of July 3rd...kicking off July 4th they have a parade in Gatlinburg. The Smokies Baseball Stadium in Sevierville is also having an Independence Day Celebration with fireworks on July 3rd.

1. Re: 4th of JULY Fireworks: Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg? The parade is pretty fun especially for kids. There are always lots of people and the parade lasted just about 1 1/2 hours as I recall. Go early and park in one of hte garages or even better take the trolley over from Pigeon Forge to avoid the traffic.
