Hawaiian makes a big effort to leave on time so if the plane is at the gate, boarding will start about 30 minutes before the departure time.. You also need to keep in mind that you need to give yourself enough time to fill up the gas tank and return your rental car AND take the shuttle ride back to the terminal.
Are the Sky Caps still available? I gave up years ago (at least 6-7) trying to check in at the Hawaiian areas. Trying to wrangle 3 kids, luggage etc etc whilst the husband returned the rental car was all too hard.
