   I have Tracfone and an inexpensive 3-year-old LG phone. We are going to Portugal and The Netherlands in a few months. I understand that Tracfone calls must be made from within the United States. But I have also read that with the right SIM card, Tracfone can indeed be used in Europe without also buying one of Tracfone's International plans.

If you don't plan on using the phone for internet, then you don't need a smart phone. Like I posted before, I found very basic unlocked phones for as low as $15 on EBay.
