You may find credit card slower if you have to sign to use an overseas card, but some places take Apple /Google Pay as well. I think you will find few places now that are cash only. Personally I use a bank ATM on arrival to withdraw maybe $100USD in local currency, and use my credit card for nearly everything.

The Kalihi Transit Center is the closest site to HNL but not worth going unless you’re getting a senior discounted card. As mentioned you can also order an Adult HOLO card by creating and logging into your HOLOcard.net account.

Some properties will accept a debit card, but a hold may be placed on the account for the amount of the stay plus usually some additional amount. I saw one TripAdvisor reviewer complaining about a policy of a Doubletree in California that placed a hold, on both credit and debit cards, for the full amount of the reserved stay, plus $50 a day.
