We could use iPhone FaceTime and WhatsApp though the hotel wifi was not brilliant so very stilted conversation so just messaged instead. Then due to an urgent need to speak to UK we used the KeepCalling app very very cheap and worked great (our mobile provider does not allow bolt ons for roaming in UAE) and tbh even if they had then KeepCalling much cheaper.
