    I travelled round Japan for 4 weeks in May-June 2024 and only used wifi. I did not get a local SIM or have international roaming or have an eSIM. It was no problem. Every place I stayed in, from hotels to hostels to ryokans to minshukus, had wifi. Many cities have free wifi in the streets and most JR trains have free onboard wifi.

Even if you reserve a table at the restaurant in person, they ask for a Japanese number. I just told them I don’t have one.
