I booked a flight on Swiss Airlines (SFO - ZRH) through the United Airlines site simply because it was a direct flight and also the cheapest at the time.

There is a G economy fare, but if you choose BE for an international trip, that G code is the one used for BE, not N which is restricted to domestic travel. You can see this by doing a dummy booking YYC-ORD and looking at the BE vs E fare code.
6 years ago. We have often gotten offers to upgrade from E+ to FC on UA Domestic flights. Some are very good offers, such as $8/pax, per direction, for IAH - IAD - snatched that in seconds. Now, LAX - SFO was once offered at $400+/pax, for one leg. Just had a good laugh over that, as FC RT for PHX-LAX-SFO was $389.
Re: United Airlines cash upgrades at check-in. UA now offers so many upgrade chances, IME, before and during check-in, that it's rare to have an upgrade offered at the gate. If they do, they are usually at least $650 USD that last few times I've seen them, which was at least three years ago. Pull up your itinerary and see if you can upgrade now.
