3. Re: Best place to exchange US dollars into Rand in CPT? It's better if you buy rands in your country, if it's possible , you can look in advance good rate, I did it. The ticket for the MyCiTi bus (from the airport) can also be bought with a credit card, if anything.
12 years ago. Living in South Africa a few months each year, I have become accustomed to just walking up to an ATM there and withdrawing the rand I need for daily living. My US bank, Wells Fargo, charges me $5 per transaction, so I usually take out R3000, which is about $400 at today's rate of exchange - the ROE.
1. Re: Exchanging Dollars for Rand at JNB Airport. What I always do is just stick my card in one of the major bank's atm at the airport and get whatever cash I think I might need. Whatever the fx and atm charges, it's still .000x% of the trip budget - especially when going to Sabi Sand.

Certainly for USD. All the main banks FNB, Standard, ABSA, Nedbank or Capitec will on any day give you virtually the same rate. The Rand/Dollar pair is freely exchanged anywhere in the world at the Internationally quoted rate for that hour. Minus commission rate which for all the major banks is basically the same.
The South African rand is legal tender in the Common Monetary Area member states of Namibia, Lesotho, and Eswatini, with these three countries also having national currencies: (the dollar, the loti and the lilangeni respectively) pegged with the rand at parity and still widely accepted as substitutes.

The airport is not the best place, for I was told, but still I exchanged at the airport since at that time was 1 in 10.. They have many exchange booth, rate varies, so have to look around I would take a reasonable amount of cash taken from US bank ...
