You'll purchase liability through your car rental company (that's required), but this AAA insurance may cover the vehicle. The only way to know for sure is to contact Hertz directly though. I would never book an overseas car rental thru AAA or thru the Hertz US site. Book directly thru the Costa-Rica based agency and get all your questions answered in writing. You assume 100% responsibility for any and all damages incurred to the car during the rental. You will first have to pay for the repairs and related fees while in Costa Rica. Only then can you file a claim to be reimbursed by your card carrier. Even though your credit card may cover damages to your car in Costa Rica.
1. Re: Car rental insurance. Third party liability insurance is madatory in Costa Rica, and it usually is not part of the daily rental rate. For sure, all on-line companies like Expedia do not include this cost into their quotation. Thus expect to pay extra 10-15 USD per day on top of your Expedia quote.
