The airport is basically open from 5:00 am to 1:00 am for rentals. Budget / Avis has locations at 18th & Church and 300 North 1st Street, Hertz has a location at 31st and Charlotte, Enterprise also has 3 locations in / near downtown (200 Main St, 1000 Hawkins St in the Gulch and 1700 8th Ave S).

The downtown area around the main hotels and lower Broadway is vibrant, clean, well-lit, well-trafficked, and well-policed. You can find lots of back and forth here in the forum about staying at Opryland vs downtown, but I always recommend folks stay down in the heart of things.
For any hotel you're looking at factor in any fees they might charge for parking, or conversely what you'll have to pay to park downtown. If you're staying downtown/midtown & just doing the usual downtown tourist stuff, a car usually isn't worth it economically or in terms of bother.

There's free parking at Nissan Stadium most of the time. Second, needing a car or not will depend on how long you're staying. If I was staying in the Vandy area for 3 days or less, I would not get a car. As you've noted Lyft/Uber are cheap and plentiful plus the city bus routes servicing the Vandy area are pretty good.
