   And I must admit, I'm a control freak. Sometimes I do the research and let the travel agent book it to receive the commission. Hawaii will be the most expensive, and probably most complicated trip I've planned before (multiple islands, multiple hotel stays, car rentals, interisland flights, etc), so I'm thinking of letting AAA book it for me.

Rather than stay in Kailua Kona, suggest staying on the Kohala Coast for nice beaches, snorkelling and weather. To check for LIH to PDX flights for the date that you have in mind, try google flights.
