Klzl, as far as I am aware, you can get a free BUS transfer within two hours of swiping your MetroCard at a SUBWAY station (at the beginning of your journey). So, theoretically, yes, I suppose you could walk 1 mile from the subway and then catch the bus and get a free transfer.

    1. Re: free transfer from subway to bus. Yes, the free transfer is within 2 hours, the card "remembers" it. On a regular bus you put the card in the fare reader and it will say "transfer" on the LED. On an SBS bus (like the 34th street bus) you put you card in the machine at the curb at the bus stop and get a paper ticket.
